Blue Letter Bible’s free iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch application is another good option for those wanted to study the bible. Some of the more advanced features and certain translations are only available whilst you are online – but for those always connected this is not a problem.

Online Commentaries and Dictionaries available

When you are reading a bible verse you can click on to gain access to a variety of options including highlighting and bookmarking, and also some more advanced features such as looking at dictionaries and commentaries including the following:

• Torrey’s New Topical Textbook
• Smith’s Bible Dictionary
• Nave’s Topical Bible
• International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia

You are presented with a list of definitions or audio commentary relevant to he verse you are looking at.

Concordance/Interlinear

This is probably the most powerful and useful part of Blue Letter Bible. The verse is broken down by word showing the original Greek or Hebrew word. Simply click on the word and you can see a variety of information including pronunciation, outline of biblical use (i.e. what is means in the bible), and also the ability to see all other instances in the bible of that word.

There is also a version comparison that allows you to see the current verse in multiple bible translations.

Other

There is an online help guide which may be useful to make sure you can get the most of the application. You can also choose to have the text automatically scroll for you, which could be a nice feature for some people.

As with some other iPhone applications, you can also take personal notes which can be very useful.

Design

The overall design is good, with most options easy to get to. Some of the icons could maybe do with being slightly crisper and more iPhone like – but that is a minor point.

All in all, as long you don’t need to download your bibles, you may find Blue Letter Bible the perfect study tool for your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
